Nevanac Eye Drop Uses

To prevent and treat redness, pain and swelling that occurs after cataract surgery.

How it works

Nevanac Eye Drop is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory prodrug. It is converted in the eyes to an active form, amfenac. Amfenac inhibits the production of a chemical called prostaglandin that is responsible for causing pain and swelling in the eye.
What is Mefenamic acid?
Mefenamic acid is a NSAID or non steroidal anti-inflammatory drug. This medication reduces hormones in the body that cause inflammation and pain in the body. Mefenamic acid is used for relief from pain or inflammation induced by conditions such as arthritis, or menstrual cramps.
Mefenamic acid is sold under several brand names, some of which are Ponstel and Ponstan (made by Pfizer). This medication may also be prescribed for conditions not listed here. Nevanac Eye Drop

Important Information about Mefenamic acid
Mefenamic acid (Ponstel, Ponstan) usage may lead to life threatening heart or circulatory problems such as heart attack or stroke, especially if used for a long period. Mefenamic acid is not recommended for use just before or after a heart bypass surgery (CABG). Seek emergency medical attention if you have chest pain, weakness, shortness of breath, slurred speech, or problems with vision or balance while taking Mefenamic acid.
Mefenamic acid may also lead to severe bleeding or perforation in the stomach or intestines which can be fatal and can happen without warning, especially in older adults. If you experience or witness side effects of stomach bleeding such as black, bloody, or tarry stools, or bloody cough or vomit that looks like coffee grounds, get medical attention or call your doctor right away.
Some common medications such as cold, allergy, pain killers, or medicines similar to Mefenamic acid (ibuprofen, ketoprofen or others) contain NSAIDs. You must ask your doctor first before taking such medications. Taking multiple NSAID based medicines may lead to too much of this type of medication in your body. You must check the medication labels properly to ensure that you don’t take too much of NSAID.
Mefenamic acid is a FDA pregnancy category C drug. It is not know if this medication can harm an unborn baby if taken during pregnancy. It is also not known whether this medication can pass into breast milk and harm a nursing baby. However, you must notify your doctor in advance if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant, or if you are breast feeding. Mefenamic acid is not recommended for children below 2 years without proper medical advice.

Before taking Mefenamic acid
Before using Mefenamic acid (Ponstel, Ponstan), make sure to discuss about all the points and precautions mentioned above. Ask your doctor if it is safe to use Mefenamic acid on top of some other conditions which you may be suffering from.
You must not use Mefenamic acid if you are allergic to it or to other NSAIDs.

How should I take Mefenamic acid?
You should take Mefenamic acid exactly as directed by your doctor. All medications come with a patient leaflet with complete instructions and details. Refer it for any doubts. Do not alter the course of the medication in any way (do not take more or less than the prescribed dosage). Also do not take it after the period for which the medication was prescribed is over. Always store Mefenamic acid medication in a cool and dry place.

What if I forgot to take a dose of Mefenamic acid?
Do not miss a single dose of Mefenamic Acid. However, if you miss a dose, take it as soon as your remember it. Do not take the missed dose if the time to take the next dose is almost up. Instead continue with the original schedule. Never take multiple doses closer to each other.

What to do in case of an Overdose?
In case of an overdose of Mefenamic acid, get emergency medical attention or call the Doctor immediately. Overdose may cause nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, dizziness, drowsiness, black or bloody stools, bloody cough, urinating less than normal or not at all, shortness of breath, fainting, or coma.

What should I avoid while taking Mefenamic acid?
Avoid other medicines which contain NSAIDs. Also avoid alcohol while taking Mefenamic acid as alcohol can lead to stomach bleeding.

Mefenamic acid Side Effects
Some common and non serious side effects of Mefenamic acid (Ponstel, Ponstan) are nausea, heartburn, headache, upset stomach drowsiness, or dizziness. If any of these effects persist for longer period or deteriorate, get medical help right away.
Most people don’t get serious side effects due to Mefenamic acid but stop using this medication and get emergency medical attention if you experience any of these serious side effects: chest pain; weakness; shortness of breath; slurred speech; problems with vision or balance; black, bloody, or tarry stools; bloody cough or vomit that looks like coffee grounds; stiff neck; unusual weight gain; mood or behavior changes; less urination; or lethargy.
The side effects listed above are not the only ones to occur due to Mefenamic acid usage. There may be others.

Mefenamic acid Dosing Information
Your Mefenamic acid dosage will be decided by your doctor after examining you thoroughly. Dosage may depend on several factors like age, seriousness of the conditions, other conditions, and allergies among several others.

Interaction with other drugs
Consult your doctor before taking an antidepressant medication like fluoxetine, escitalopram, citalopram, luvoxamine, or others. These medications when taken with NSAIDs may cause easy bruising and bleeding.
Other drugs which can interact with Mefenamic acid are warfarin, lithium, methotrexate, diuretics, steroids, aspirin or other NSAIDs (ibuprofen, ketoprofen, Diclofenac, celecoxib, or others), or heart or blood pressure medications (benazepril, enalapril, lisonopril, quinapril, or others). These are not the only drugs which can interact with Mefenamic acid. Inform your doctor about all drugs which you may be using. Never start a new medication without proper medical advice.
